The street kids of Bangkok

September 25th, 2006 by The Lost Boy

A walk around Bangkok presents many images and curiosities. Whilst most of these images evoke mere intrigue about the city, the images of children and adults begging for money are somewhat more striking and provoking.

The coup – shining people in dark times

September 24th, 2006 by The Lost Boy

The people of Thailand appear to have dealt with Tuesday night’s military coup as if it were just another day at the office. Indeed, the last coup of this sort was just 15 years ago. Walking through the streets of Bangkok the initial air of panic has evaporated and been replaced with a peculiar, almost jovial atmosphere.

DJ QBert – unique

September 23rd, 2006 by The Lost Boy

DJ QBert recently played a gig at QBar in Bangkok. Around the year 2000 I conducted an interview with QBert, a DJ who is widely regarded as the most technically adept in the world with a pair of turntables. He is one of my heroes and was once part of the now disbanded Invisibl Skratch Piklz. QBert has won multiple DJ accolades and created an album named Wave Twisters that was made into a full length animation.

The show at QBar was a little disappointing as QBert’s set was rather short and it was difficult to see him in action. It was, however, still memorable to see him live.

The tanks are here

September 23rd, 2006 by The Lost Boy

It has been an eventful, mad rush of a few days. At the time of writing, the much talked about military coup is but 24 hours old. This has truly been the most exciting and interesting time of The Lost Boy’s stay in the Land of Smiles. With hindsight, most people have been saying that the coup did not come as a surprise, but to The Lost Boy at least, the fact that a coup happened at all was really rather shocking. The rumour mill had been churning out rumours of a coup for months, but nobody thought it would happen this suddenly and in this manner. It felt as if some real element of history was being made, and it was utterly enthralling.

Is it the end for cube head?

Love in the Land of Smiles

September 21st, 2006 by The Lost Boy

This is the first Lost Boy column that appeared in Guru Magazine in April 2006.

The Lost Boy has an aim, and that aim is to fearlessly delve into the crevice of confusion between the world of the Farang and the world of the Thai. From the point of view of a confused, bemused and occasionally abused Farang boy, each week the most pressing and concerning issues will be dealt with in an attempt to bridge some sort of understanding between all parties living in Bangkok. The vast array of things in this city that confuse our poor, lost boy can surely serve to help us understand each other better, or at least highlight the reasons why we are so startlingly different.
