Uh oh: Yet another interview with Thaitanium

February 4th, 2007 by The Lost Boy

What could I ask the band that’s been asked everything a million times before? Thaitanium have been in every magazine, interviewed by every journalist in Bangkok and beyond. Well, this was my attempt to tread new ground with old material, digging up the differences with Way between life in Thailand and life in the US, where the guys are heading to record their sixth album.

On girls
The difference between girls over here and the girls over there? [Thinks] Girls over in the US are a little more confident and have a little bit more attitude, whereas the girls here are conservative or conservative on the low. The girls’ bodies in the US are more developed while females in Thailand are a little more on the petite side. We actually like both, it doesn't matter where they're from as long as we can get along, communicate, kick it, it's all good.

On the way of life
Living in Thailand is cool; it’s chilled and laid back. Cost of living is cheap and they party here like there’s no tomorrow, whereas in New York everybody is always on the move. Not waiting for the next man, “I have to get mines” mentality. We love living in New York because that’s where we get our inspiration from to do our music. We know that in a two-to-three block radius there's probably, like, 20 kids that rap, want to be a producer or a DJ. The competition there is off the chain, so it pushes us and makes us work even harder, and plus New York is the home of hip hop. For khan and Day, Thailand will always be home, it’s their place of birth. One day they would like to come back and retire and have a place somewhere by the beach. As for me, I'm definitely gonna have a house in both places, but New York is home to me, all my family is in America.

On acceptance in two different countries
At the end of the day, music is a universal language. Even if you don't understand what the other person is saying, if u listen to the melody or the beat you can definitely feel the vibe of the song. We don't find ourselves having a hard time to fit into any hip hop circle here or in America. In New York we have a studio at the crib and it’s always filled with up-and-coming rappers, and even rappers who already made it sitting at our crib till like three, four in the morning, vibing, working on music together. As for Thailand we have groups under our label that we're working with: Southside Phuket and Rastafar. We're always looking for up and coming artists here in Thailand to break.

On food
You can find food in Thailand 24 hours a day, from noodle stands to 24-hour diners in the hotels. In NYC, there’s food but it gets a little harder to find food in the wee hours of the morning. It really depends on what you’re in the mood for, but we feel Thailand has more variety of choices.

On where to party
To us, America, because there’s so much more diversity in the club scene and you don't see the same people at the same clubs, probably wearing the same thing as they did last week. Here in Thailand they play the same music everywhere, which is cool, but there’s only so many times I can listen to Beyonce in a night.

On recording in the States
Our studio is in New York and we're more focused there. Over here, there's too many distractions. We're different artists over here than there. We get to create over there, whereas when we're over here we have to promote what we created. If we're talking about making a new album, it’s definitely gotta be over there. Need time to sit there and marinate with what we're about to do, but if we're jus doing songs we can bang that out in a couple days so it doesn't matter where we are.

being Thailand’s primary hip hop act
Of course, we don't want the scene to just consist of us. Hip hop here is still growing and will only get bigger, but that’s up to the kids. Hip hop in the US is in its thirties, here in Thailand it’s like five. The kids here need to do their homework and understand the culture, the lifestyle, the attitude, who came before, to understand how it came about today. I mean, if you really love it and appreciate it and not just think of it as the latest fashion then the scene here in Thailand will grow.

On forthcoming projects
We have a VCD coming out end of Feb called Thaitanium: Censored Live, from our big concert at BEC Tero Hall on November 15. Also, Spit DVD: Volume Two. It’s a DVD hip hop magazine that showcases up and coming talent and also established artists that we've met here in Thailand, New York, LA, and Japan. It’s actually the international edition. Spit 1 is also out; you can cop it at our clothing store, Dope Spot, second floor, Lido movie theater, Siam Square. We're flying back to NYC on Feb 9 to go bang out some new music for you guys. See you guys real soon. Shout out to 13 Crowns, Bangkok Invaders, Silksounds, Neversay, 9Face, and all the fans who supported us through the years. Bless all ya'll.

I walked into a door again

February 4th, 2007 by The Lost Boy

Last night was the second time in the space of around a month that I have walked into a glass door without seeing it. I can’t explain how these things happen. I was at the Chicks Rock party and was not paying attention to where I was walking (because I was carrying a bucket of ice) and I collided cataclysmically with the closed sliding door that leads to the outside balcony.

I didn’t drop anything, and I didn’t hurt myself as I did the last time, but I think it’s moments like this that make me question my ability to function as a regular member of society. I didn’t plan to go out last night, I was going to stay home and consider the good and bad points of life as a whole, but it seems I am too weak to say “no”. I now hope to stay in for a very long time. I cannot be doing with the wasted Saturdays and Sundays that just drift by thanks to varying states of consciousness. More than ever I want to go to Japan, if only to hang out with the Gothloli girls.

Honestly, what am I still doing in Thailand? There’s some solace in the fact that I’ve been listening to really great music for the past few days. My playlist has been dominated by:

  • Peter, Bjorn and John
  • Brand New
  • The Concretes
  • The Shins

You must try and listen to some of these bands if you can. I’ve written them in order of preference. Bands such as these make me feel like I need to be somewhere else, somewhere without glass doors, and without girls to torment my fragile mind.

Here's a completely useless, but rather cute thing, courtesy of Last FM, that tells you what music I have been listening to recently.

29-year-old man pretends to be a boy

February 3rd, 2007 by The Lost Boy

This is the strangest bit of news I’ve read for several months. I found this on the BBC website:

A 29-year-old convicted sex offender has spent four months at a US school after successfully posing as a 12-year-old boy, officials say. Mr Rodreick adopted the name Casey Price to attend Imagine Charter School, investigators say. He attended classes and always handed in his homework on time. In all, Mr Rodreick spent nearly two years disguised as a boy.

That is amazing. A fully grown man spent two years pretending to be a boy. He even went to school! Have you ever heard anything quite like that? This guy was 5 feet 8 inches tall; not exactly tiny. There are some very strange people in the world. It’s got me thinking about some of the kids I went to primary school with; maybe they were just pretending.

Glastonbury 2007

February 1st, 2007 by The Lost Boy

Now is the time to register for Glastonbury 2007. You can do so by visiting the official website. It’s been a while since I went to Glastonbury, but the three times I did go were probably three of the best times of my short life. Some things you just can’t put into words. If you’ve never been then you really should. You can’t really understand Glastonbury until you’ve been. It sounds like such an arrogant thing to say, but it’s true. There’s nothing and nowhere quite like it on earth. I’m not 100% sure I will be able to go, but I’m hoping I can; somehow. Registering does not reserve you a ticket, but it gets you to the next stage. Bjork is playing this year. If that is not enough to make you want to go then I can’t help you.
