A failure on so many levels
I'm so angry right now. From AP:
Maternus Bere arrived in Indonesia on Friday and was taken to a hospital with undisclosed health problems, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah. He faces no charges in Indonesia and will be a free man after treatment.
All that talk by the UN, Amnesty International, NGOs, opposition parties, the media (myself included), and it was for nothing. They've tried to pass it off as some kind of illness that couldn't be treated by any of the health professionals in Timor-Leste, which is nonsense in itself.

It's no secret that the health system here is far below world standards, and anyone with a serious illness who can afford it tries to go outside Timor-Leste for treatment.
But the justice system is even worse, and there's nowhere outside to go — certainly not to Indonesia, and apparently not to the international community, notwithstanding the UN's repeatedly stated commitment that that can never be impunity for crimes against humanity, anywhere.
The Bere liberation makes me angry too, but it's one part of a long struggle for justice. It took Timor-Leste 24 years to get rid of the illegal Indonesian occupation; I hope it won't take another quarter-century to bring the major perperators to account. In the end, justice will prevail. Last week's judicial developments in the Hague and Canada are the latest examples.
A luta continua, and people interested in knowing more about it, and participating, can find information on the Bere case and other justice-related issues in Timor-Leste at http://www.laohamutuk.org/Justice/99/bere/09MaternusBere.htm
