Apple’s iPhone works in Thailand

September 14th, 2007 by The Lost Boy

Thanks to 4am Expat for breaking this story. Apparently, the iPhone has now been unlocked and can be used in Thailand on AIS. You can buy an unlocked iPhone from here for $599. The recent price slashing of $200 off all iPhones apparently increased sales by about 300%.

The $399 8GB model is still ridiculously expensive, however, and I don’t expect many people in Thailand will want to stump up $599 for an unlocked 4GB version. It works out at over 20,000 baht. For that sort of price, you could buy almost 50 of my phone. If you can, it would be better to pick up a 4GB iPhone for $299, although once they are gone, Apple won’t be making any more of them.

Although Apple has pledged to make more 8GB versions, some are speculating that the drastic price cuts have occurred because Apple will launch a new version of the iPhone some time next year. Initially I thought about buying one, but phones aren’t really my thing because I hate using them.

37,000 baht! Holy cow. That’s expensive. I could buy a house for that much.

You hate using phones!! I am so offended because I love using phones. I can not believe that you would write something so offensive on your blog. You are such an uneducated person and don’t respect other people’s feelings.

I hope everyone can read into the sarcasm dripping off the above comment. Thank You.

I kinda hate to say this because I love the technology I have, but every overpriced fad makes me want to jump off the grid.

Hypocritical I know, but it’s how I feel.

My girlfriend and I do not have cell phones here in Thailand. It’s kinda refreshing honestly.

err where do you see houses for sale like that sucka??

I’m holding out for the Uk launch on the 18th, why anyone would want to be lumbered with 1995 technology like the US is forced to use, god only knows.

    give me 3g anyday

Not an employee, but a fan :-)
Apple’s hardware just has that classy feel to it. So much so, that my girlfriend refuses to use my Macbook at university as her peers tease her about it being to Hi-So for her.

An iPhone at 20,000 Baht is still a good deal. You are not just getting a phone, but rather a full multimedia device. Ipod, video player, internet communicator that just happens to work as a phone too. The built in wifi ability is awesome, it’s much easier to carry around than a notebook and you could take advantage of Thailands countless hotspots.

The apps are also not dumbed down mobile apps, but rather full featured programs. Safari, apple mail, address book, itunes etc. And let’s not forget that it runs one of the best OS’s in the world Mac OS X.

OK, that’s my rant. Now I’m going to rush out and go see about getting myself one.

It is a lot of money for something of which the displays breaks down after using it a few times.

I’m not really into that Apple Hype, not in iMac, iPod nor iPhones.

But hey, let everyone decide for his own.
