There was a story in The Times recently about a British couple who claimed they were scammed and falsely arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. There was a media outcry about the incident. The Times lead with:
A British couple who were falsely accused of shoplifting in Bangkok airport and were forced to pay £8,000 in bribes to secure their release are to take legal action for compensation.
More:
They were accused of taking a Givenchy wallet worth £121 from a King Power duty-free shop and were handed over to the police. An official release order from the local Thai prosecutor’s office subsequently conceded there was no evidence against them.
And yet King Power has posted up a video that shows what I'm fairly certain is the woman putting a purse in her bag and walking off with it. Watch the video and see for yourself. Assuming it is the same woman, and it does look like it, what the heck has happened?
Is anyone else confused?

I must admit, I've lost track of what is going on in Thailand. I've been paying more attention to events in Timor-Leste. There are far more interesting things going on than the colors of people's shirts. I was surprised — actually bemused — to read this on the Bangkok Post website:
Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) flocked into Udon Thani province Saturday, amassing at the airport to intercept the arrival of People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leaders who planned join a PAD gathering in the province.
So the PAD is still protesting. The group was originally set up to protest against Thaksin. After the coup of 2006, the group disbanded. It then got back together to protest against Samak being prime minister. Samak quit after being found guilty of hosting a television cooking show. Our beloved Sondhi had at one point said that Somchai would be a suitable prime minister, but then Sondhi changed his mind and the PAD protested against Somchai.
A lot of madness ensued and now Abhisit is prime minister, but the protests continue. The UDD was set up to protest against the PAD and the PAD spends at least some of its time counter-protesting against the UDD's protests.
I'm lost.

If you somehow managed to make your way to Suvarnabumi airport today, instead of seeing the list of (cancelled) scheduled flights, you’d see a sign that says:
“We are the most lovely protesters. Being bombed, shot, injured and killed we still sit here to protest peacefully to oust corruption government.â€
So as long as they’re lovely than I guess it’s OK that they’ve taken over the airport. These guys are just chilling out. It’s like some kind of eerie music festival. There are families playing badminton in front of the check-in desks.
They are in fact so lovely that they reportedly threw water at and tried to punch a plainclothes policewoman.

Note: This was definitely a hoax. OK, I fell for it. I so wanted it to be real though.
Original story: In one of the oddest decisions made in the past few weeks, the Ministry of Science and Technology has announced that Thailand's time zone will on August 23 be turned back 30 minutes. I'll have some more information on this later, but as of right now, I have no idea whose benefit this is for. At 8:30 am on August 23, clocks will go back to 8 am, no doubt confusing the hell out of everybody for the rest of the day.
Venezuela did the same thing last year when they turned the clocks back half an hour to increase the amount of sunlight residents are exposed to. Part of the reasoning for the move in Venezuela was also to get kids to wake up earlier.
Thailand has about 12 hours or so of sunlight per day. Would a 30-minute change in the time zone make any difference to anybody?
Addendum: The email looks as if it came from the National Institute of Meteorology. You're on your own for the translation.
