Congratulations to the people of Bangkok

Your parties to raise money for the people affected by Cyclone Nagris were a tremendous success.

When are your parties for the Chinese affected by the recent earthquake?

mmm well …. what is the point you’re trying to make ? people from Bangkok don’t care about China, Love Burma… something along these lines ?

  2. The Lost Boy Says:

No, that’s not my point. My point is that there is no point in these parties.

China is significantly more wealthy than Myanmar. The whole worlds’ media is on China at the moment and Myanmar has taken a back seat for now. I can’t see how anyone making money for relief funds is pointless….

Burma has been in need of aid for years. Parties like this stroke the egos of those who attend and organize, but little else. I’m not fond of this reactionary charity work that only comes out during times when the media spotlight is at its most glaring.

I can see this perhaps turning into a heated discussion. I’m a cynical kind of guy but that’s just me. So I will say no more.

Make Powerty History, Live Earth, Band Aid, switch-off-your-light-5-minutes-a-month, a vigil after 9/11?

I agree … self serving, ego-patting exercise that solves nothing, but do raise awaress… for about as long as the Fox crew is there…

  7. Lana Says:

Yeah, easy to be cynical, but the way I see it, if you don’t throw a big ol’ fiesta then it would not occur to a lot of these rich folks to donate their money to a cause - and doing fundraising publicly turns it into a bit of a contest, which encourages people to give more.

I saw 2 million baht raised in the space of about 3 hours at a Phuket function once and was blown away. For Aids orphans.

I prefer to direct my wrath at the Burmese junta blocking all the aid!

  8. Roger Says:

I think “rich folks” gives money more because they get tax exemption than because they feel pressure from the one down under

As a volunteer fundraiser I regularly raise between 20 and 800 pounds. no party, no ego to flat, no photo-op, just shaking a bucket…
