Thailand’s darling - DJ Nakadia

September 30th, 2006 by The Lost Boy

DJ Nakadia’s story is one told many times. She met a photographer on the internet by chance in 2001 and went to France to pursue a career in modeling. During her time in Europe she became interested in clubbing and the music she was hearing on the dance-floors of Germany. In 2002 she began DJing and has never looked back since.

“For the past 2 years I have been mostly playing in Europe and travelling to Thailand only for a holiday,” says Naka from Germany. “Europe feels like home now.”

Is she wearing the blue, the red or the green?

Cover shoots and a unique look for a DJ have meant that Nakadia has received major media attention all over the world. Being a DJ from Thailand has a lot of people overseas curious about her.

“I don’t feel like I am the only big Thai DJ,” says Naka. “In Thailand I am just one of many DJs and I don’t feel any different to them. Of course, in Europe at interviews people always ask me a lot about Thailand and I am happy that I have the chance to promote my country in that way, but people have to understand that the world is one big dance-floor. There are good DJs from every part of the world. You don’t need to be from the UK to be good or to have good records. When I started DJing this was a little bit different. In the beginning the people did not care about the Thai chick behind the decks and they only came to look at me.”

Nakadia evidently wants to move away from the stereotype image that seems to haunt her whilst still being able to utilise that very same image for part of her marketing strategy. It seems a little catch-22, but Nakadia is working hard and is even producing her own music.

What will she wear to the party tonight?

Nakadia’s most noticeable achievement recently was DJing at the World Cup finals in Berlin. “The world cup final was great and sad at the same time. I was booked with the promise that my set would be live on television around the world for three billion people,” sighs Naka. “They changed the plans over and over again and I was a little disappointed that my performance was only screened in some countries. On the other, hand it was amazing to be inside this world cup. I was able to hold the trophy and the game ball, meet some of the Italian players in the tunnel under the stadium and I had access to the pitch so I took a little piece of grass from the final back home with me.”

Rumours have also been circulating that Nakadia will be following in Tiesto’s footsteps and playing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. “We have to wait two years to find out. When I played a set at the staff party for the World Cup, Douglas, the director of the World Cup closing ceremony and the last four Olympic opening ceremonies, who booked Tiesto, told me he would do everything he can to make me play the opening in Beijing. I’m not going to build my hopes up too much, but that would be great if it happens.”

What was her name? Is she into the game?

Naka has also been maintaining something of a socialite’s lifestyle, meeting the right sort of people to aid her career. “In Europe my base is in Berlin when I am not playing, so I know most of the German DJs. Westbam and Timo Maas have been very nice to me, and one of my good friends is Afrika Islam. I am taking scratching lessons from him at the moment. I keep in contact with a lot of other DJs through MySpace. That website is really a meeting point for all DJs and I have a lot of fun mailing people like Erick Morillo. We exchange links for downloads there and many other DJs send me their new tracks directly from the studio.”

Naka sounds as if she genuinely wants to be admired for her music first and beauty last. Her look, however, is what has given her the opportunity to play all over the world and gain the experience needed to become a revered DJ. “I’m aiming to help promote electro in Thailand so that people have more than just hip hop to listen to. I hope Thailand is ready for this.”
