Backing up your website and why you need Filezilla

May 24th, 2007 by The Lost Boy

Filezilla is a freeware, open source FTP client that you ought to download if you have your domain hosted somewhere. What Filezilla basically does is allow ease of transfer between your website and your desktop. When you get it running you will have a window with your computer’s files on one side and your server files on the other. This is particularly useful for downloading system backup files, as well as for restoring your files in the result of data loss. It’s easy to use. One you have downloaded Filezilla you enter your domain (domain.com), your username (user@domain.com) , the password for your user/domain, and the port as “21”. You will then be connected to your server et voila! Easy file transferring.

To create a backup of your website, firstly you should select the “backup” option from you cPanel and then choose to backup your whole system. The file will take some time to compile, but once it’s down you can then drag it from your server to your desktop using Filezilla.

To backup Wordpress documents, use the latest version of the Wordpress Database Backup plugin. Activate the plugin and manage it from the “Manage” tab on your dashboard. Download full backups straight to your desktop.

And, well, those are the lessons I’ve learnt over the past 24 hours.
