Trying to learn the Thai alphabet

It’s one of those things that as soon as you think you’ve reached a level of understanding, something else jumps up at you and forces you to realize that you’ve got a long way to go. I’ve got my vowels down, some consonants, and have just learnt that seven vowels change form when in the medial position. This is more difficult than A-level maths.

Come on that is not that difficult! 10 letters a day, every morning, lunch and dinner, just write them down on a piece of paper + the one form the day before. It takes less than a week!

It's not the actual remembering of the letters which is the problem, it's making sense out of them when they turn into real words. As everybody seems to find pretty quickly, the vowels are a bit of a pain (and it takes a while to get your head around the ordering of the letters); then there's working out which tone marks, or lack of, produce which tone; and of course all those exceptions and mutations (particularly with 'ร'). And just for fun there are the 'missing' vowels, and multiple consonant letters with the same value. Oh yes, and the lack of spaces between words. It's an interesting intellectual challenge, Thai.

(One thing I found useful was/is having a Thai keyboard, which is basically a US layout with the Thai letters added; if you're a "keyboard worker", having it in front of you all the time gives you a good overview of all the letters, and the positioning provides some useful clues as to their frequency. Might not work if you're a habitual touch typer though).
