I try and avoid trips to McDonalds at all costs, but sometimes I have to succumb to a craving for salt and fat. I think a combination of missing Western foods and eating rice and noodles all day every day brings on this desire to eat unwholesome meals. The satisfaction is generally short-lived, however, as after some initial excitement I tend to end up feeling hideously sick.
I was in McDonalds with my girlfriend last week when she pointed out the McRice burger to me. I immediately thought the name was hilarious and ranked it up there with the McFish (which is, incidentally, the single funniest sounding word a Thai girl can ever say).
I decided to investigate the theory behind this McRice. It looked pleasing enough in the promotional picture.
Apparently, according to The Taipei Times, McDonalds has already sold five million McRices in Taiwan since the launch six months ago and is seeking to brand the product globally. If you’re behind the times, the McRice is a burger (chicken or beef) sandwiched between two rice buns. Sounds tempting? Probably not.
So here is my first McRice. It really doesn’t look anything like the promo pictures. That’s no surprise with McDonalds, but this was even less like the pictures than normal:
I took one bite and was disgusted. The rice buns were not dissimilar to polystyrene. I took a second bite and accidentally ate some of the paper surrounding the burger at the same time. The taste was not affected.
After two bites it was thrown in the bin. What a horrible thing the McRice is.
