Nobody is perfect — not even the IHT

Everybody makes mistakes. Here are a couple from the International Herald Tribune. While such an occurrence to this degree is rare, it is somewhat heartening to remember that newspapers are not the products of machines. We tease Nation every day for making disastrous mistakes, but, from time to time, even the big boys slip up.
Meanwhile, some victims were reportedly getting spoiled or poor-quality food, rather than nutrition-rich biscuits sent by international donors, adding to suspicions that the junta could be misappropriating foreing aid following the May 3 storm that more than 34,000 people.

It seems as though AP put it out. I note the little copyright notice down the bottom which reads:
“Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.”
Does this mean even if USA Today did notice the error, they would be infringing APs copyright by running a spell check? Haha.

IHT has corrected it now. Although you expect wire stories to be mistake-free, there are occasional errors.

From my experiences wire services have disclaimers and it’s up to the publisher to take responsibility for both spelling and any factual errors, and any problems cause by either.
The fact that AP, AFP, Reuters and the like rarely make mistakes means publishers are happy to use their content without checking it, especially when a lot of the online material is automatically generated (from AP right onto a news website) without any human intervention.
