Robbie Fowler joins Thai football team

The title says it all really. Liverpool don Robbie Fowler has arrived in Thailand ready to start a stint at Muang Thong United. The 36-year-old former England international is set to be the Thai Premier League's highest profile star when he's formally unveiled on Sunday.

Asiaone has more:

Fowler's arrival could be a vindication of the giant leap the league has taken over the past few years, which saw a sharp increase in audiences during competitions that not so long ago struggled to draw any interest from the public.

Observers believe that the signing of Fowler, who was nicknamed "God" for his scoring exploits, would be a big boon to the league in terms of growth – a notion that was strengthened by positive reaction from fans in general, not just supporters of Muang Thong.

Thais will of course be familiar with Robbie Fowler and he will likely get rockstar treatment everywhere he goes in the Land of Smiles. Liverpool has long been a popular team in Thailand and to have a legend like Fowler in the national league will certainly draw people to games, if nothing else. I'm unsure how fit Fowler is but it's worth noting that he scored nine goals during his recent 28-game stint in Australia playing for Perth Glory.
