We were in Hanoi over the holidays and I should really have known better than to take my bag out of New Year's Eve, especially as the "slash and run" pickpockets of the city are so frequently written about. Lucky for me I caught the people slashing my bag as they did it and although they managed to get their hands on my passport and were about to make off with my phone and wallet, I grabbed them and got everything back, although my bag was a little worse for wear, as you can see:

Thankfully they didn't get anything, but the pickpockets were out in force that night and I imagine it's the same at any time things get busy with tourists in Hanoi. I could also feel the cheeky scoundrels going through by pockets, but I knew they were empty bar a few old tissues, so that wasn't too much of a concern. Anyway, just a word of warning if you happen to find yourself in Hanoi some time.

  1. You will have to tell us more about your experience of Hanoi. We were comingforn Hue and we spent new year eve there last year and we simply hated it. It is the first time, to my demise, that I have such feelings when travelling (and I have travelled a lot). We were so unhappy that we ran back to Bangkok 2 days earlier than planned. Up until the end (the airport) we felt being permanently scammed and cheated, it was such a stressful experience that I even forgot that I had a friend to visit there!!! Only when the plane took off, I felt I could breath again.

I was told that people either hate or loath Hanoi and that the south was different. I want to see Ho Chi Minh but I don't see myself visiting Hanoi again.

  2. My last sentenced should read "I was told that people either hate or love Hanoi…" You see I have been traumatised!
