Termites invade Phuket Town

March 2nd, 2008 by The Lost Boy

I’m unsure what stage of the apocalypse a plague of termites signifies, but something strange is going on in Phuket Town. The bloody things are everywhere. It started on Saturday night while driving my bike when I began swallowing an unusual number of bugs.

Sure enough, when I got to 7-Eleven, there were termites buzzing around all over the place. It may be that the weather has changed and inspired the island’s termites to come into the open. Or we may all be doomed. Whatever, the lizards are extremely happy and are getting unusually fat.

I never knew that termites had wings — and enormous wings at that. Did you guys know this?

Termites are relatively poor flyers and are readily blown downwind in windspeeds of less than 2 kph, shedding their wings soon after landing at an acceptable site, where they mate and attempt to form a nest in damp timber or earth. (Wikipedia)

There’s so much about the world that I am unaware of.

As you can tell, it has been an uneventful weekend, the highlights of which are my new kettle, desk and enormous box of cornflakes.

Don’t believe Wikipedia with everything. This is what I found in on the website of my phuket magazine”

Another kind of insect that swarms is the flying termite – meng mau in Thai. These erupt during the rainy season from underground termite nests and come in a variety of sizes, with the biggest having a wingspan of about an inch and a half.

They are attracted by light, so if you don’t want them in your room, keep the windows shut and the lights off, especially if you have a wooden leg.

Catching flying termites – alates, to give them their correct name – place a large bowl of water under the light on your balcony. Many of the alates, thinking that they’ve seen the Moon (Hooray!), will dive straight into the water.

The next morning it will take a little while to separate the alates from the wings, but what you end up with is a very tasty meal. Fry ’em up and chow down.

Asked my girlfriend and she says meng mau are very nice and usually come out when the rain comes. Seems you cannot eat all of them.

    Bon appetit.

If you were a flame and I was a termite, I would fly to you right now. Though, it might be too hard for me to do so since my wings are severely broken, like my heart.

    PS, I miss you

Sooksiam my dear! Where have you been all this time? i was beginning to worry.

Never knew that about termites and truthfully it doesn’t endear them with me at all. I was happier thinking of them wingless and in the dark than flying about like that. Hopefully it’s just the weather and your plague of termites will soon disappear. Of course I don’t like to think about where all of those termites might disappear to.

Unsuccessfully, I have been searching for a place to establish a speedo party on the beach in Thailand, exclusively for foreign mature men. I am sure that the event will attract worldwide attention. It could even rival the Full Moon Party. Yet so far, I have failed to do so.

    Well, don’t give up, Sooksiam.

I didn’t realise South East Asia had such a problem with termites. I live in Sydney and we have quite a few. IN fact up and down the east coast of Australia there are serious problems with them.

So dont worry about swallowing too many termites. I heard they have good vitamins for you.
