What are you listening to right now?

September 10th, 2007 by The Lost Boy

I haven’t got a decent new album for ages. The only thing I’ve acquired recently has been Willy Mason’s latest offering, If the Ocean Gets Rough. It’s beautiful, as everything he does is. If you’ve never heard of Willy Mason, then I recommend you check him out.

So that’s my tip, now I’d like to hear about what new music you’ve been listening to recently. I don’t want anything to do with dance music either. Anything indie, folk, pop, rock, down tempo, whatever. Just give me some ideas about what you’ve dropped in your iPod recently. I desperately need some new music.

As a rough guide, at the moment I’m still listening to Bjork, Nick Drake, Nick Cave, Brand New, The Shins, and so on.

I am also listening to Bjork, but it is not the latest album; it is her old work: “Homogenic”. This album is a piece of art. I do not particularly like her music, but I just like the song called “unravel” pretty much. Check out this MV on Youtube, here:

Aside from “Homogenic”, right now, I have been listening to a song by Amy Winehouse called “Tears Dry on Their Own” everyday, for a couple of weeks. Ah! she is so blessed.

    “He walks away,
    The sun goes down,
He takes the day but I’m grown,
And in this grey, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own,”

do you ever came across smog, aka Bill Callahan?
    http://www.dragcity.com/bands/smog.html

american singer songwriter , hometaping ,lofi rock, chamber pop, albums produced by Jim O’Rourke. listen his song asking yourself - mental disorder ? you will get depressive songs, songs about being a loner, father complex , mother complex and recently also sister complex, drowning phantasies. imaginaryfriendless, claustrophobic humorous and so on. perfect for a lost boy.
if you like drake and the late nick cave, you will like smog too. i am sure. he is one of the great underrated artists.

i recommend a little bit older album to start with “WILD LOVE”.
if your look for it on google blogsearch you can find a mp3 download.

Willy Mason is great. So much new stuff disappoints, but Cinematic Orchestra’s recent album ‘Ma Fleur’ has some touching moments that manage to be simulaneously saddening and uplifting. Especially ‘Music Box’.

Other than that i find more freshness in old albums: Brian Eno’s ‘Music for Airports’ i adore, mambo maestro Tito Puente, The Cure’s back catalogue, and anything by the recently departed Malian singer and guitarist Ali Farke Toure (try Savane). And because its fun to feel sad sometimes and I don’t count downbeat electronica as dance music, I also recommend Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss (first two albums, not so much the new one).

Which version of the song do you like? I personally love both of them. Here is “Breathe (2003 Version)”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDQw-RShRUQ&mode=related&search=

This track is just so good. It always makes me feel serene when I listen to it. Imagine you listen to this track on the beach. Oh my god! I am so jealous of you.
